  • Pokemon Red ROM (available online)

  • SD card

The Nintendo Wii offers many options other than the standard gameplay that consumers have come to expect-- next generation motion controllers, online play and other features. The Wii console can also be soft modded with homebrew applications and emulators that allow you to play old classic games as well as some modern console games, such as Pokemon Red for the Gameboy Color. The Homebrew Channel is required before you can install and emulate Pokemon Red on the Wii.

Visit the Google Code website and click on the "Visual Boy Advance GX 2.2.4.zip" link under "Download" on the left hand side of the page. This is the Gameboy/Gameboy Color/Gameboy Advance emulator for the Wii console and it has the ability to emulate all of the game libraries across all three handheld consoles with near-perfect compatibility. Extract the download and save it to your computer. Afterward, navigate to your choice of ROM websites and click "Download Your File," "Download this ROM" or "Download ROM" to save the Pokemon Red ROM to your computer. Extract the ROM and save it to your computer.

Put an SD card into your computer and access it by clicking "My Computer" and right-clicking on your SD card to format the card as "FAT32" if you have not done so already. If you have not formatted the SD card you will need to do so. Right-click on the SD card and click the "Quick Format" and "FAT32" box to format the card. Click "Start."

Create an "Apps" folder on your SD card if you have not done so already. To create the "Apps" folder, access the main directory of the SD card. Once you are in the main directory, right-click and choose "New" and "Folder" from the sub-menu. Afterward, name the folder "Apps" so the VBA GX emulator will operate correctly.

Create a folder in the main directory of the SD card and name it "ROMS." After you have created the "ROMS" folder, place the "Pokemon Red" ROM into the folder. The VBA GX emulator will look in the ROMS folder to find the Pokemon Red ROM.

Insert your SD card into your Wii. Launch the Homebrew Channel on your Wii by pressing "A" on the channel. Once the channel loads, the VBA GX emulator will load. Press "A" on the emulator to launch it. The Pokemon Red ROM will be displayed on the main page of the emulator. Press "A" on the "Pokemon Red" ROM to play the game.

Tips

Installation and operation of the Homebrew Channel and/or homebrew applications will void your Wii warranty.
