How to Change Your Password on a Netgear Wireless Router

by Jim Campbell ; Updated September 28, 2017

The password for a Netgear wireless router provides your network with security against unauthorized users. To change the password, you must log in to the Netgear's Web-based console and change the password. The password change affects all users connected to the wireless network, and any new connections to your network must use the new wireless password.

Click the Windows "Start" button. Click "All Programs." Select your Web browser from the program groups to open a browser window. The Netgear console is completely Web-based, and you can use any browser to connect.

Type "" in the navigation text box. Press "Enter" to open the initial console login screen. Type "admin" for the user name and "password" for the password. Press "Enter" to log in to the router's console.

Click the "Setup" navigation link, then click "Wireless Settings." This link opens all of the settings for the wireless network, including the password.

Type your new password in the "Passphrase" text box. Type it a second time in the "Confirmation" text box. Click "Apply" to save your changes.
