How to Send Files From PC to Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 is a gaming system produced and distributed by Microsoft. Users can not only play games but can also download and watch videos, music and pictures with the system’s media center. It is also possible to send files from your computer to the Xbox 360 by using a home network connection. This allows you to view stored media on your computer through your Xbox without having to move the actual file to the game console.

Connect to Your Home Network

Determine whether your Xbox 360 will connect to your home network through a wired or wireless connection. A wired connection requires a modem and an Ethernet cable, which is included with the purchase of the Xbox 360. A wireless connection requires a router and a wireless adapter. The Xbox 360 S series is the only console that has a built-in wireless adapter; all other consoles require the purchase of a wireless adapter.

Complete the wired connection for your home network, if applicable. Locate the Ethernet cord that came with your Xbox 360. Connect one end to the Ethernet port in the back of the console, and attach the other end into the back of the modem. Plug the phone or cable line into the back of the modem, and ensure that it is plugged into the wall.

Complete the wireless connection for your home network, if applicable. Attach the wireless adapter to the back of the Xbox 360, and plug in the attached USB cord. Extend the antennas on the adapter. Ensure that your router is connected per manufacturer's directions and has an Internet connection.

Set Up Your Computer

Choose the computer software you will use to send the media files to your Xbox 360. The gaming console can connect and stream data from your PC with Windows Media Center, Zune software or Windows Home Server.

Configure the settings for Windows Media Center. Open the application on your PC. Click on "Stream," and choose the "Turn on Media Streaming" option. A pop-up box will appear. Place a check-mark in the "Turn on Media Streaming" box, and click "OK" to save the settings.

Configure the settings for your Zune software. Open the application on your PC. Choose the "Settings" option, and select "Xbox 360." Place a check-mark in each box for the type of media file you would like to stream to your Xbox 360. Click "OK" to save the settings.

Configure the Windows Home Server. Open the application on your PC. Choose the “Settings” option, and click on “Media Sharing.” Change the setting from “Off” to “On” for each type of media file you would like to stream to your Xbox 360. Click “OK” to save the settings.

Turn on your Xbox 360, and allow it to load to the Dashboard.

Navigate to the “My Xbox” option, and scroll through the options to select "Video Library," "Music Library" or "Picture Library." Choose whichever option you will need, based on the file type you want to send from your PC.

Scroll down the list on the left-hand side of the screen to locate your PC. Choose your PC, and allow the Xbox to make the connection. All available files from your PC will be shown in a list.

Click on the file you would like to view.
