How to Start a New iPhone Without a SIM

by Jay DarringtonUpdated September 28, 2017

iPhones that are sold to the general public are often locked to one provider through a SIM card. However, you can still enjoy most of the features that the iPhone offers, such as music management and apps without having to use a SIM card to link the phone to a network. If you plan to upgrade to another iPhone or smartphone, but want to keep your old one, this could be a useful alternative.

Connect the iPhone to a PC while iTunes is not running. Allow up to six hours to charge the iPhone.

Press the power button at the top of the iPhone. Wait a few moments while the iPhone boots up.

Enter the current date, time and your general location when prompted to.

Open iTunes. If prompted to activate your iPhone, click "Skip" or "Cancel."
