How to Program an RCA Unversal Remote Without a Code Search

by Bryan Roberts ; Updated September 28, 2017

Universal remote controls, such as the ones manufactured by RCA, are used to control a wide variety of devices, including VCRs, DVD players and digital cable boxes. These remotes are programmed to control devices through the use of program codes that are available with every universal remote manual. As long as you have your manual, you can program your remote to control devices without making use of the remote's "Code Search" feature.

Look in your universal remote's manual for the codes needed to program the remote to your device. These codes are sorted by the type of device and device manufacturer.

Press and hold the "Code Search" button, then press the button for the device you wish to control. For example, if you wish to control your television, press the “TV" button on your remote. The light on your remote should flash once.

Enter one of the codes from your manual into the keypad on your remote, and then release the "Code Search" button.

Test the remote by pressing the "On/Off" button, along with the other pertinent buttons on your remote. If none of the buttons work, repeat the process with another code from your manual.
