Selecting the right image for your project makes all the difference in whether it is successful. From signs and ads to web-page layouts, the images you use are the first thing someone notices. Perhaps you have the perfect image, but it is too small or the resolution is too low. While you could simply enlarge it, doing so incorrectly results in a fuzzy picture. If you have access to a good graphics program, learn how to correctly increase the size and resolution of an image.

Photoshop

Load the image that you want to work with onto your computer, either by transferring it from a digital source or by scanning it in.

Open Photoshop. Select “File” from the menu and choose “Open.” In the dialog that appears, locate the image you loaded and open it.

Select “Image” from the menu and choose “Image Size.” In the dialog that appears, change the “Interpolation” to “Bicubic Smoother.”

Increase the pixel width and height of your image as well as the resolution. Click “OK” and save your work.

GIMP

Load the image that you want to work with onto your computer, either by transferring it from a digital source or by scanning it in.

Open GIMP. Select “File” from the menu and choose “Open.” In the dialog that appears, locate the image you loaded and open it.

Select “Image” from the menu and choose “Scale Image.” In the dialog that appears, increase the size and resolution by 10 percent. Click “OK.” Repeat this step as many times as it takes to get the image to the final resolution you want. Save your work.

Photoshop Elements
