How to Sync a Thunderbird Calendar Online

by Jason Spidle ; Updated September 28, 2017

The open source Thunderbird email client--developed by Mozilla, the maker of the Firefox web browser--does not come with a calendar application. By adding the Lightning extension, users can integrate the Mozilla-developed Sunbird calendar program with Thunderbird. The focus of Lightning is to integrate web-based calendars into the Thunderbird interface and to extend the functionality of email to include scheduling and task management. By using Lightning, you can sync a Thunderbird calendar online with Google, Yahoo! or Windows Live.

Install Lightning Extension

Launch Thunderbird.

Select "Tools," then "Add-ons."

Click "Get Add-ons."

Search "Lightning."

Click "Add to Thunderbird" and restart the program to enable the extension.

Yahoo! Calendar Sync

Launch Thunderbird.

Select "File," then "New" and then "Calendar."

Select "On the Network," then click "Next."

Select "CalDAV" and then paste the URL for the Yahoo! Calendar you want to synchronize, then click "Next." The Yahoo! Calendar standard URL format is https://caldav.calendar.yahoo.com/dav/[USER NAME]/Calendar/[CALENDAR NAME], where [USER NAME] is your Yahoo! username without "@yahoo.com" and [CALENDAR NAME] is the name of the calendar.

Enter a name and select a color for the calendar, then click "Next" and "Finish." You will need to enter your Yahoo! Calendar password to complete the setup process.

Windows Live Calendar Sync

Launch a web browser.

Navigate to Windows Live Calendar and log in to your account.

Click "Share" and select the calendar you want to synchronize with Thunderbird.

Select "Share this calendar," then check "Send friends a view-only link to your calendar."

Click the first ICS calendar link and copy the URL displayed, then click "Save."

Launch Thunderbird.

Select "File," then "New" and then "Calendar."

Select "On the Network," then click "Next."

Select "iCalendar" and paste the ICS URL into the location input box, then click "Next."

Enter a name and select a color for the calendar and then click "Next" and "Finish."

Google Calendar Sync

Launch Thunderbird.

Select "Tools" and then "Add-ons."

Click "Get Add-ons."

Search for "Provider for Google Calendar."

Click "Add to Thunderbird." Confirm the installation of this extension by clicking "Install Now" and then restart Thunderbird.

Launch a web browser.

Navigate to Google Calendar and log in to your account.

Select "Settings" and then "Calendar Settings."

Click "Calendars."

Click the calendar you want to sync with Thunderbird.

Copy the XML calendar address to your clipboard. You can use the default address or the private address.

Select "File," "New" and then "Calendar."

Select "On the Network" and then click "Next."

Select "Google Calendar" and paste the XML calendar address for the Google Calendar you want to synchronize and then click "Next." You will need to enter your Google Calendar password to proceed.
