Printing a large JPEG image on multiple sheets of paper, also called poster printing or tiling, is a two-part process. The large graphic is divided to fit on standard 8 1/2-by-11 paper, then taped or glued together. The finished poster-size printout uses a combination of either two, four, nine, 12 or 16 sheets of paper, laid out in a square or rectangle.

Take a photo with your camera. Use the highest pixel count the available on the camera. Higher pixel counts create sharper images. Load the image on your computer’s hard drive. Use your preferred software to crop, adjust the colors and any other desired changes.

Look at your color printer's “Print Properties” menu. Check the "Page Set-Up" tab for a box with page layout options. Scroll through the list for a “Poster” printing option. Choose a size from the list. Images can be set to print on two to 16 sheets of paper.

Download Posteriza 1.1.1.462, a free software program, from the freeware website. The program works with any Windows operating system and uses BMP, JPEG and GIF graphic files. There is no installation, after downloading the software, click on the file in Windows Explorer and it opens automatically. The program is easy to use even for beginning computer users. Posteriza adjusts the print margins to provide an overlap to connect pages. Print pages on the highest resolution your printer allows.

Download Ace Poster 1.23 to print a poster of any size. This software is rated highly by review website CNET.com and its users. It is an older program and works with older versions of Windows operating systems. This software has a free 30-day trial period. You must register the software before printing to avoid the program automatically typing the words “unregistered program,” on each page. This is a basic program with a few options to learn. Change the size of the poster by typing in the desired width or height.

Print a wall full of photo sections with the help of Block Poster. Select and image from your computer and upload it to this free website. Photo files must be less than 1 megabyte. Cut up the photo into the desired number of pages wide, choose portrait or landscape and follow the onscreen prompts to complete the process. Add paper to your printer and click on the “printer icon” to print.

Tips

Take several photos with the people in different locations and a basic background if you want to add text. Check the amount of paper needed to print the poster before printing to complete the job.

Warnings

Images with fewer than 200 pixels per inch may not be sharp when printed.
