How Do I Sell Games on Steam?

by Melissa King ; Updated September 22, 2017

There are many barriers that independent game developers must overcome to get their game into the hands of gamers. Getting a product noticed and adopted by a large studio, for example, can be very difficult. Major publishers usually have their own ongoing projects, and do not have time to work with indie creators. One option for creators trying to get a game to the public is to sell it through Steam.

Place your game, either a demo or the full version, on an FTP site, so Valve Business Solutions can review it. Make note of the login information for the FTP site, as Valve needs this to access your game.

Go to the Steam website and scroll to the bottom of the page. Navigate to the “About Valve” tab. Click “Steamworks.”

Click “Getting Started,” located on the menu on the right side of the screen. Click the email address shown on the screen.

Send Valve all pertinent information about your game. Include the game's title, suggested price and release date. If your game has been released previously, also include information such as sales to date, reviews received and languages the game supports. Send the FTP login information as well. Valve will contact you with further details or decisions made.
