by Arn GoldmanUpdated September 28, 2017

The Moving Picture Experts Group's MPEG-4 (MP4) file format appears most often as a video file on portable devices like the Microsoft Zune and Apple iPod. MP4s use efficient compression to compress videos into small files without greatly compromising video quality. In order to play MP4s in certain movie programs, you wll first need to transfer them into Audio Video Interleaves (AVIs), a high-definition format developed by Microsoft. Multiple online conversion tools can perform this service.

Media Converter

Load Media Converter (see Resources) and click "Upload a file" to select your MP4. Click on the "arrow" button.

Choose "AVI" as your output format and click the "arrow" again.

Click "Start" to convert the file and "Download" to receive your AVI.

Zamzar

Load Zamzar (see Resources) and click "Browse" or "Choose File" to pick your MP4.

Choose "AVI" as your output format and enter your email in the "E-mail" window.

Click "Convert." Load your email inbox. You will receive a download link for your new AVI.

Media Convert

Visit Media-convert (see Resources) and click "Browse" or "Choose File" to select your MP4.

Select "MPEG-4 Video (.mp4)" in the "Input format" menu and "Audio Video Interleave (.avi)" in the "Output format" menu.

Click "OK" to convert the file and "Download" to receive your AVI.
