There are a few companies on the Internet that offer people free email accounts. Setting up an email account through any of these email providers is simple and requires the user to answer a few questions before an email account is established. The providers usually require personal information such as name and birth date. However, they will not ask for a social security number or for a credit card number if they are a legitimate company.
Find a reputable company with which to establish a free email address. Yahoo!, Google and Hotmail offer are among the popular choices, but many other companies exist as well. See References below for links to these email providers.
Click on the link that says "create a new account," once a reputable company has been found. The site will walk you through the necessary steps once you click on this first step.
Fill out all the necessary information. The site will ask you for your first and last name, birth date, city and state of residence and an alternate e-mail address at which to contact you.
Choose your email ID and password. Your email ID can be just about anything. If the ID you have chosen is already taken, you will be prompted to choose a new one. In some instances you will be given two to three choices that are variations of the original ID you chose.
Set up a "Forgot your password" prompt. The site will usually ask for a question that only you know the answer to. In the event that you forget your password, you will be prompted to give the answer to this question so that your password can be reset.
Never give out any personal information that you don't feel comfortable sharing. Never give out credit card numbers, especially for a free email account. Do not use personal information such as birth dates or pet's names for your password. Doing so can make it easier for hackers to access your information.
