Files that contain the IPD file extension are used exclusively for BlackBerry mobile device backups and store your phone's information including SMS messages, contacts and mobile phone configuration settings. In order to use these files for backup and recovery purposes you must have the ABC Amber BlackBerry Converter program to view the IPD files, as well as the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to restore backup information. The BlackBerry Desktop Manager is available for free from the official BlackBerry site and is compatible with Windows PCs. The ABC Amber BlackBerry Converter program is available online for a nominal fee.
Convert IPD Files using Converter Program
Download the ABC Amber BlackBerry Converter program (see Resources) and double-click the download to run the installation wizard. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation and double-click the "ABC Amber BlackBerry Converter" icon on the desktop to run the program.
Click the "Open IPD" button in the lower-left corner of the program window. Alternatively, click "File" at the top of the program window and select "Open IPD" from the drop-down menu.
Locate the IPD file in the Open window and double-click the file to add it to the converter program.
Select the output format for the IPD file in the "Output" section of the convert program and click the "Save As" button to convert the IPD file.
Open IPD Files in BlackBerry Desktop Manager
Download and install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager (see Resources).
Insert the USB cable into the bottom of the BlackBerry mobile device. Insert the other end of the USB cable into the computer's USB port.
Click the "Start" button at the bottom of your PC's desktop and select "All Programs," "BlackBerry" and "BlackBerry Desktop Manager." On your Macintosh computer, click "Go" at the top of the screen and click "Applications" from the sub-menu. Double-click the "BlackBerry Desktop Manager" icon in the Applications window.
Select "Backup and Restore" in the Backup Manager's window and click "Restore."
Locate the IPD file in the "Restore" window and double-click the file to open it. Wait for the restoration to complete and unplug the USB cable from the phone.
