There are many safe and simple ways to send or wire money on the Internet. The first step is to choose a company that will handle the wire transfer for you. There are several reputable companies that deal with money transfers.

Western Union

Western Union is one of the most trusted organizations for sending money internationally. Established in 1851 as the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Co., Western Union rapidly expanded to include money transfers within the United States. In 2006 Western Union handled 147 million person-to-person transfers. The company now offers a service for sending money online. The person receiving your money does not need to have access to the Internet. There are more than 100,000 locations worldwide where people can collect money sent over the Internet in person.

To send money:

Got to and click the "send money" box on the main page and then select the "send money online" option.

Complete the form by telling Western Union where you want to send the money from and where the money needs to go.

Select the service you wish to use from the list. Usually, the fee for the service will be higher if you want the money to be available to the recipient faster.

To complete the transfer, you must enter your personal and financial information on the next page. Western Union will create an account for you using this information so you do not have to enter the information again if you choose to send money another time. Western Union accepts Visa and MasterCard for the money to be sent. If you wish to send cash, you must visit a Western Union branch in person.

PayPal is an established Internet-only money sending service. It works in a different way from Western Union by allowing you to upload money to a special online account. The money you upload can then be sent to people who also have a PayPal account. Because you can only spend what you upload, you are able to control your spending. In the extremely unlikely event of unauthorized access, your personal accounts are safe.

To send money:

Visit and click on the "sign up" button, then select "PayPal for you."

Complete the form by providing your email address, name, address and credit card type.

PayPal will then set up your account. Before you can send money, you will need to provide details of your bank account so you can upload money. To do this, PayPal will make two small deposits to your chosen account. You must check your bank statement to find out the amount of these deposits and enter them online. PayPal uses this method as a security measure to make sure the person creating the PayPal account is the holder of the bank account.

Once PayPal has authorized your account, you can wire money to anyone who has a PayPal account. Once someone has received your money, that person can keep it in the PayPal account or download it to a bank account.

IKobo is a good alternative to Western Union and Pay Pal. It has been operating online since 2001 and allows its users to send money internationally over the Internet. It works by allowing users to use their credit or debit cards to fund a wire transfer. The recipient gets a iKobo prepaid debit card loaded with the money you sent, and the person can then use the Kobo card in stores. The minimum amount you can send is $10, and the maximum is $1,000. Various fees apply for the service. Visit for more details.
