One of the major benefits of Sony's PlayStation 2 game console is its backwards compatibility. Gamers can play most games from the first-generation PlayStation on the PlayStation 2. This can cause some confusion, since the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation use different memory cards. Thankfully, Sony expected this and made the PlayStation 2 compatible with PlayStation memory cards. Any gamer can play PlayStation games and keep saves on PlayStation memory cards using their PlayStation 2.
Make sure your PS1 memory card is inserted into one of the two memory card slots on the PS2. These slots are located in front of the PS2, right above the controller ports.
Insert your PS1 game into the PlayStation 2 and play.
Follow the in-game instructions to save your game when you are ready. When the game asks you which slot you wish to save to, make sure to save the game to the slot containing your PS1 memory card.
Turn off the PS2 after you have saved. Take out the disk and turn the PS2 back on to access the PS2 main menu.
At the main menu, select the icon for your PS1 memory card. The file you just saved should appear in your PS1 memory card.
Warnings
Be sure to use a PS1 memory card made by Sony. Other memory cards are not guaranteed.
