If your Verizon plan includes a certain number of phone minutes per month, exceeding that limit can send your bill skyrocketing without any warning. You can save yourself from wireless phone bill sticker shock by using Verizon's tools for checking and monitoring your minutes.

Sign in to Verizonwireless.com. Register, using your cellphone number, if you haven't already.

Find the entry labeled "Minutes used" (or similar) from the Account Overview page.

Dial #MIN and press "Send" from your cellphone, alternatively. Verizon Wireless will respond with information on how many minutes you've used. This call does not deplete your balance.

You can also use Verizon's online account information to check on your text message usage as well.

If you find that you exceed your allotted minutes regularly, consider stepping up to a plan with more minutes. Once you've used up the minutes included with your plan, even local calls placed from your cellphone can cost more than placing international calls from a land line.
