The PC role-playing video game The Witcher transports players to a fantasy medieval landscape of combat and magic. One of the game’s signature features is the Alchemy system, whereby players can concoct potions, oils and bombs for use during the game’s quests. Potions are particularly useful, as they can have benefits ranging from increased power and vitality to the curing of status ailments. Creating potions can be difficult at first, but with a little patience you will become a master Alchemist.

Find a place to Meditate and activate Meditation Mode.

Select the Alchemy panel.

Select a Formula from the list on the left side of the screen if you wish to brew a potion you have already learned. Potions for which you have the appropriate ingredients will be highlighted.

Select an Alcohol Base from the ingredients displayed on the right side of the screen, if you wish to manually experiment with a potion. Use a Strong Alcohol for a potion requiring three ingredients, a High-Quality Alcohol for a potion requiring four ingredients or a Top-Quality Alcohol for a potion requiring five ingredients. Drag the Alcohol into the Base slot in the center of the screen.

Select your desired ingredients from the ingredients panel. Though there are many types of ingredients, each ingredient will contain one of the six primary alchemical substances: Vitriol, Hydragenum, Rebis, Aether, Quberith and Vermillon. The effects of the potion are determined by the interaction of these substances.

Drag each ingredient into an Ingredient slot in the center of the screen. The ingredients may be placed in any order.

Ensure that every ingredient has the same secondary substance if you wish to imbue your potion with a secondary effect. The possible secondary substances are Albedo, Nigredo and Rubedo. Albedo potions reduce your Toxicity level for one hour, Nigredo potions increase your attack power and Rubedo potions regenerate your vitality.

Click the Mix icon on the lower-right of the screen to create your potion.

Tips

There are many different types of potions with widely varying effects. Experiment with different ingredient compositions or consult an Alchemy Guide to create useful potions.

Warnings

Save your game before you drink an experimental potion. A failed potion will have detrimental status effects and may result in death.

Keep an eye on your Toxicity level. Each potion you consume will raise your Toxicity, and your character may overdose and die if your Toxicity level climbs too high. Use Albedo-infused potions to lower your Toxicity.
