How to Make a Book in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop can be used for a variety of projects. One interesting project you can do in Photoshop CS4 is to create a book you can then publish through Amazon’s CreateSpace. For example, if your goal is to create a children's book, picture book or book of poetry, Photoshop will allow you to do the image creation, layout and text all in the some program. By using Photoshop’s many tools, you can blend your text with your illustrations to create a highly professional-looking book.

Storyboard out your book. This is especially necessary if you will be creating a children's book with illustrations or a photo book with, for instance, quotes below the images. If your book will include text, have your text prepared in relation to what will appear on each page.

Open Photoshop and set the width and height of what you want your book to be. Set the resolution to at least 300 for any book you intend to place on CreateSpace. Choose a background color. Keep in mind that you will need to review the CreateSpace size and color and page requirements before you begin since their requirements will vary according to the size of your project. Don't forget to allow for a margin on each page. Name the file “Page 1.” Of course, you will be creating a different file for each page.

Use your storyboard as a guide to create each page of your book Use the Pen tool to outline the design and the Paintbrush tools to paint them in. Save each new element on a separate layer. You can use the Select tools to select specific areas to fill in using the paint bucket tool. Experiment with filters as well as well as gradients.

If you will be including text, you will need to choose a font type and size and color. You can opt to use different types of fonts and vary size and colors, but, generally speaking, it’s best to stick to a single style. Save each page as you complete it as a numbered file in the same folder.

Click "File," then "Automate," and click “PDF Presentation.” In the browser that opens, select “Multi-Page Document,” and then select the files you want to include in the PDF document. You can arrange their order by dragging them up or down. Then click “OK.” When the conversion is finished, you have a PDF book ready to be uploaded to CreateSpace.
