How to Solve Net 10 Wireless Problems

Net10 prepaid mobile phone service is touted as "Pay-as-you-go made simple." A subsidiary of prepaid mobile giant TracFone, Net10 products are easy and convenient to use. According to comments on Internet forums about prepaid telephone services, N10 is relatively trouble free. When problems do surface, however, they can usually be resolved in a few simple steps.

Make sure the phone is activated. If you have recently obtained your Net10 phone. it may not yet have been activated on the Net10 network. You can activate your phone online at or call Net10 customer service center at 1-877-TEN-CENT (1-877-836-2368).

Verify that the phone is functional. The phone's screen should display the remaining minutes and the expiration date, along with other pertinent information such as the signal strength and battery life. If nothing is displayed on the screen, charge the phone to refresh the battery. If the phone still doesn't work, you probably need to replace it.

Verify that the phone has available minutes. On Net10 phones, the number of remaining minutes is continuously displayed on the telephone handset. If the handset displays "0.0," no minutes are available. To add more minutes, purchase a Net10 card from a local retailer or the Net10 website.

Verify that the phone activation has not expired. In addition to requiring available minutes, Net10 phones must also have funding added to their balance on a periodic basis. If the Net10 account expires, the remaining minutes are forfeited and the telephone handset will read "0.0" in the available minutes area.

Verify that you are in a Net10 service area. Net10 telephones should function in any area covered by GSM (Global System for Mobile), the protocol used by AT&T and T-Mobile, as well as many other wireless carriers in Europe and Asia. Look at the the coverage indicator, a digital representation of a tower with "bars" indicating service. If it displays just the tower but no bars, you are probably outside the service area.

Check that the SIM card is properly installed. Directions for accessing the SIM card vary depending on the model of the phone. Generally you need to remove the battery cover and the battery to find the SIM card. A small plastic card with tiny circuitry and copper connectors, the SIM card stores information about your telephone service, including your number and proprietary account data. It must be present and correctly seated for your phone to work. If you do not have a SIM card, visit a Net10 retailer to purchase and activate one.
