How to Find English Subtitles

by eHow Contributor ; Updated September 22, 2017

If you're into foreign films, you may have to go out of your way to find a movie theater that plays them, especially if you do not live in an urban area. So viewing foreign films on your computer can be convenient -- if you have the English subtitles. Fortunately, the Internet features free websites where you can find English subtitles. You just need to know where to look.

Use your search engine. Put the title of the film in quotation marks ("), using the original language, and then put "English subtitles," also in quotation marks.

Use one of the websites that pop up. The search engine should list websites that feature the film title you are looking for. Browse the websites to see which ones appear more user-friendly, or check out the References section for links to some websites. You just have to input the title of the film in the search box, and selections of subtitles will appear. You may have to scroll down to find the English subtitles, as they will usually have them in multiple languages.

Choose which subtitles to use. Sometimes you will have many different sets of English subtitles available. So how do you know which is the best translation? It's a little difficult. Usually, it's best to choose a few of the highest rated ones. If you know some of the film's language, put on the subtitles, and go to a certain scene where you can see how accurate the translation is.

Tip

  • Check out a site to see if it's trustworthy before downloading the subtitles. You don't want to download anything malicious!
