If you are getting ready to trade in your Xbox 360 or planing on giving it to a friend, then it might be a good idea to erase everything from your console's hard drive by formatting it. Formatting your Xbox 360's hard drive will remove all saved files as well as profile information and any downloaded games or videos.

Start up your Xbox 360 and log in to the master account. Make sure there are no discs in the tray before proceeding.

Go to the "System" area of the Xbox 360 dashboard and scroll all the way to the right to the "Memory" pane. Select this pane by pressing the "A" button and then scroll down to the "Storage Devices" option. Press "A" and a new menu will pop up.

Select "Hard Drive" from the Storage Devices menu and then press the "Y" button on your Xbox 360 controller to pull up the Device Options area.

Select the "Format" option. A message will ask you if you are sure and remind you that formatting the hard drive will erase all content. Select "yes" from the menu and press the "A" button once to confirm. The formatting process will take a few minutes, depending on the amount of data that was on your Xbox.

Even though all of your profile information has been deleted, your username and scores still exist and can be retrieved on another console by going into the "User Settings" menu and selecting "Recover my profile" You can also log-in and view your profile at the official Xbox website (see Resources below).
