If you want to find out who your email has come from or see what information is publicly available about where you are browsing, then an IP address lookup is the way to go. Looking up your own IP address is also a great way to see what information can be found about you, through an IP address search.
Find the IP address you want to look up. To find the IP address of someone who sent you an email, click on "View Headers" in your email client and look at the line that says "received." The IP address should be in this section.
Visit a site that offers: IP address lookup, WHOIS lookup or reverse IP lookup. There are several of these sites, all offering different functionality.
Locate the IP address reverse lookup form and type in the IP address you have found. Click enter to see the IP lookup results. You will usually see the name of the web hosting provider.
Click the button that allows you to search the WHOIS database, if this is available. It will provide you with more information about the IP address's web host or Internet service provider, including the company address and some contact details.
An easy way to find your IP address is to visit an IP address lookup site. Many such sites automatically log the IP address you are using. Looking up an IP address is one way to detect potential scams.
You may have a dynamic IP address. This means that your IP address may change every time you surf the Internet. There are several software programs and sites that allow IP addresses to be faked or masked. You cannot be 100% sure that the IP address you are looking up is genuine.
