- check Avoid the most common mistakes people make when writing reviews:
- check Your job is to tell the viewer about the book, not about yourself. At the end of the review, the reader should have a very clear vision of the book and its contents and a very fuzzy picture of the person contributing the review.
- check Judging whether or not the book is any good is very different from saying whether or not you liked it. Most reviewers are unable to understand the difference. You can do better.
- check Avoid measuring the book solely against your own existing views and whether or not it happens to reflect them. This is a particularly easy trap to fall into for works of a political nature. There are both great and terrible books espousing all kinds of political views, and it takes real wisdom to recognize the greatness of a book that you disagree with and the weakness of a book that you do agree with. Exhibiting this kind of wisdom can really make you and your review stand out.
