High-capacity SD cards offer more memory than standard SD cards, storing up to 32GB of data. But these cards are not compatible with all devices that read SD cards. Reading an SDHC card from a compliant device or compatible card reader takes little more than inserting the card. But certain procedures may allow other devices to access these cards.

Compatible Card Reader

Insert the card into an SDHC compatible card reader. This may be an external card reader or a card reader installed internally in your computer.

Import files from the card to your computer or open a folder to view the files. Your card reader should automatically recognize the files and give these options in a pop-up window.

Older Card Reader

Download updated firmware or software patches to allow an older card reader to read SDHC cards.

Install the software update. It installs automatically or has installation instructions. A prompt may require you to restart your computer.

Insert the SDHC card into the card reader.

Import files from the card to your computer or open a folder to view the files. Now your card reader should automatically recognize the files and give these options in a pop-up window.

Compliant Device

Insert the SDHC card into a compatible device, such as an SDHC compliant digital camera.

Turn the device on.

Connect the device to the computer with a USB cable. Some devices may connect with a Firewire or other type of cable. Consult the device documentation if you are unsure what type of connection to use.

Import files from the card to your computer or open a folder to view the files. Your computer should automatically detect the SDHC compliant device and recognize the files on its SDHC card. Options to open the files should appear in a pop-up window.
