To preserve formatting and prepare a file for distribution or professional printing, Microsoft Word documents may be converted to Portable Document Format (PDF). There is a variety of quick and efficient methods that will turn a Word file into a PDF. If you already have the Word document open in Word 2007 or Word 2010, the simplest thing to do is use Word's built-in save-to-PDF function. If you don't have that option, use Adobe Acrobat or a free online converter.

Microsoft Word

1

Open the Word document you want to convert in Microsoft Word 2007 or Word 2010.

2

Click the "File" tab in Word 2010 or the "Microsoft Office Button" in Word 2007. Click "Save as."

3

Enter a file name for the file. Browse through your computer's folder in the "Save as" dialog box to select a destination folder. Double-click the folder where you want the file to be saved.

4

Select "PDF" from the "Save as type" list, which is located underneath the "File name" list in the "Save as" dialog box.

5

Select the print quality you prefer next to "Optimize for." Choose "Standard" for high print quality or "Minimum Size" for lower quality with a small file size. Click "Save" to convert the file to PDF.

Adobe Acrobat

1

Open Adobe Acrobat.

2

Click the "File" menu. Select "Create PDF," then "From File."

3

Browse through your computer folders and files in the "Open" dialog box. Find and select the Word document you want to convert, then click "Open."

4

Click "Open" to convert the file to PDF.

5

Click the "File" menu, then select "Save as." Enter a file name in the "Save as" field. Browse through your computer's folders to select a destination folder for the new PDF document. Double-click the folder to open it, then click "Save."

Online Conversion Resources

1

Log on to Zamzar, a free online file conversion site (see "Resources.") Zamzar will convert a variety of file types to whichever format you choose. Click "Browse" to select your Word document, then click the "Convert File to" menu to select "PDF." Enter your email address and click "Convert." The converted PDF document will be sent to you via email.

2

Log on to the PDF Converter site (see "Resources"), where you can convert Word documents and other common file types to PDF. It works similarly to Zamzar. Click "Browse" to select a Word document, then enter your email address. Click "Convert Your File" to receive the PDF via email.

3

Visit Doc2PDF online (see "Resources.") Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the converter, which will provide an immediate PDF download from your Word document. Click "Browse" to select your document, then click "Convert Document." When a dialog box appears, click "Save File" to save the PDF to your hard drive.
