How to Turn Windows Features on or Off in the Control Panel

Windows includes various programs that it does not enable by default. In addition, some programs do not appear in the Control Panel's installed programs list. These programs are Windows features that you must turn off to remove the program from your computer. Some Windows features include Internet Explorer, Windows Media Center, built-in games, Internet Information Services and various networking clients. You can turn these features on and off at any time with a few simple steps.

Log on to Windows as an administrator. Click "Start," type "Turn Windows features on and off" in the search box and press "Enter."

Click the "+" beside a folder of features to view features included in that folder. Click the box beside a feature to turn the feature on. Clear the box beside a feature to turn it off.

Click "OK" to turn the selected Windows feature on or off.

Tip

  • check Removing a feature does not permanently remove the program from your computer. You can enable a disabled feature as needed.
