What Is My Tumblr Email Address?

Posting by email can be easier than using the Web interface when you're on the go.

Every Tumblr blog has a distinct email address associated with it. Rather than being used to receive email or log in to the account the blog belongs to, however, this email address is used for a completely different purpose -- posting by email. Every email message sent to that account is automatically posted to the corresponding blog, making it convenient for quick updates when all you have on hand is your smartphone.

Finding the Email Address

Log in to your Tumblr account and click the gear icon. Select the blog for which you want to find the email address from the list. Scroll down the page until you reach the "Post by Email" section, where the email address is listed. Since the address is fairly long and displayed as an image rather than as text, copying it down precisely may be difficult. If you have issues, click the "Send This Address to Me" button to send a message containing the address to the email address with which you registered for Tumblr.

Emailing Your Posts

When posting by email, the email's subject is treated either as the title or the caption for the post, depending on what type the post ends up being. Any message that contains images will turn into a photo post; likewise, messages containing audio or video will turn into the corresponding post type. To add tags, include them at the end of the message on their own line, prefixing them with a "#" and separating them with spaces.

Formatting Text

If you want to format the text you're posting by email, use special Markdown code. Include "!m" without quotes anywhere in the message subject body to enable formatting. It will be automatically removed from the finished post, so you don't need to worry about it showing up. Surround text with underscores or asterisks for emphasis, and double underscores or double asterisks for strong emphasis; to create links, surround the link text with square brackets and add the URL in parentheses immediately next to it. The following example illustrates how you might use formatting in a post:

Both this text and this text are emphasized, while this text and this text have strong emphasis. This text links to Google.

Keep it Secret

The post-by-email system doesn't check whether the messages it receives are coming from the email address to which the Tumblr account that owns that blog is registered. Because of this, anybody who knows what the email address for a particular blog can post to that blog with impunity. Ensure you don't post the address anywhere other people may see; if you accidentally share it, you can deactivate it and generate a new one to protect your blog from malicious third parties. To do this, navigate to the Settings page for that blog and scroll down to the "Post by Email" section, and then click the "Reset" button.
