Apple didn't create the portable, digital music player, but the company's iPod captured the market and changed the way the world buys and listens to music for a reason: the elegant device features intuitive controls and is easy to use.
That easy-to-use design is evident from the get-go, and it makes transferring music from your computer to your iPod a breeze. Follow these simple steps, and you'll be enjoying your digital music library through those iconic white earbuds in no time.
Check to see whether iTunes is installed on your computer. iTunes is Apple's free software designed to collect, organize, play and transfer music from your computer to your iPod. If you have a Mac, iTunes is already on your computer. If you have a PC, you may need to download and install iTunes.
Open your web browser and go to the iTunes site if you need to install iTunes. Click the link to the Download iTunes page and then click the "Download" button. Once prompted, click "Run." After the download completes, click "Run" again. Follow the installation instructions. After the installation is complete, iTunes will run automatically.
Open iTunes if it isn't already running on your computer. Follow the iTunes setup assistant to transfer existing music on your computer into your iTunes library.
Plug your iPod into your computer using the provided USB cable. An assistant will automatically guide you through setup and registration.
Once registered, you'll be able to transfer, or sync, music to your iPod. At the top of the iPod screen in iTunes, click the "Music" tab. Options will appear to sync all of your music, specific categories of music, or even individual songs. After selecting your music, click the "Sync" button in the lower-right corner. Transfer times will vary depending on the volume of music you're syncing. When complete, unplug your iPod, and you're ready to go.
