Internet Explorer is Microsoft's default online browser. While many programs launch simultaneously during system startup, Internet Explorer is not set up to open by default. If the browser launches without your consent, this could be caused by one or several reasons. You can execute various common programs to help identify the source of this startup behavior.

Startup Item

Step 1

Remove the Windows Internet Explorer shortcut from the system's automatic startup location. Go to the "Start" menu and click "All Programs."

Step 2

Browse for the "Startup" folder and click it to reveal an entry for "Internet Explorer" or "IExplore.exe."

Step 3

Right-click the entry and select "Delete" from the context menu. Click "Yes" to confirm your selection. This effectively removes the shortcut from the "Startup" location.

Malware Infection

Step 1

Obtain an anti-malware program if the problem persists. If Internet Explorer launches along with your Windows session, your system may be infected with spyware. In this case, such windows open in the form of pop-ups, offering unwanted advertisements and other forms of online deals. Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes AntiMalware are among the examples of anti-spyware tools.

Step 2

Launch the anti-malware utility and update it. Use the program's main "Update" option from its main menu and follow all necessary instructions.

Step 3

Perform a full system scan. Allow the program to successfully scan your computer for any potential malware. Once finished, restart your system to verify that no Internet Explorer window launches when you start your computer.

Program Association

Step 1

Launch the last application that was installed. A third-party utility may be configured to visit its main website for update inspections or any other program features.

Step 2

Go to the program's main "Options" or "Preferences" function. Look for possible entries related to launching Internet Explorer during system startup. Disable any possible suggestions that relate to establishing online connections.

Step 3

Apply all changes. Restart your computer to verify whether Internet Explorer still launches along with your operating system.
