How to Set Up a Free Hotmail Email Account

By Jennifer VanBaren

Many different companies offer free email accounts, but one of the most popular and highly used is Hotmail. Setting up a free account with Hotmail is easy and takes very little time. Little information is needed, and the process of setting up the account can be done by almost anyone. With a Hotmail account, users can log onto any other websites that ask for a Windows Live user ID.

Step 1

Go to the Hotmail website in order to create a free Hotmail email account. The log-in page offers the options of either signing in to Hotmail for current users, or creating a new account for those without one. To set up a free account, click on the option for creating a new account. When this option is chosen, you are brought to a Web page asking for information.

Step 2

Fill out the information requested on the Web page the link opens. You will be asked to choose an email address name. If the name the user chooses is taken, you are given options that you may choose from. You are also asked to create and re-enter a password, to enter an alternate email address or set up a security question. This is done for password reset issues in the event that you lose or forget your password. Information like name, state, zip code, gender and birth year will also be requested. In order to ensure a secure connection, you need to enter the characters seen in a small dialogue box. The last step is to read and accept the terms of the privacy statement at the very bottom of the Web page.

Step 3

Click on the button to accept the terms at the bottom of the Web page as soon as everything is filled out accurately and completely. You will be then taken to your new email page. At this time, your free Hotmail email account is complete and you can begin looking around the email page to learn the options and possibilities it offers.
