How to Set up an Unlocked Phone on AT&T Data

by Matt McGew

AT&T is a Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) based cellular service provider in the United States. If you have an unlocked GSM cellular phone, you can activate the phone on the AT&T network. AT&T offers a variety of pre- and postpaid data plans you can add to a cell phone plan. AT&T does not offer the option of purchasing a separate data-only plan for cellular phones.

Bring your unlocked cellular phone to an AT&T; service center or retail store. Alternatively, you can call AT&T; at (888) 333-7055.

Select the calling plan and associated data plan you want to activate on the unlocked phone. You can find a link to current plans in the Resources section. AT&T; offers a variety of individual, family and prepaid plans.

Tell the customer service representative that you want to activate your unlocked phone with the plan you selected.

Fill out an application. If you are not currently an AT&T; subscriber, you have to fill out an application and AT&T; runs a credit check on your information.

Wait while the customer service representative activates your service and inserts a new AT&T; subscriber identity module, or SIM, card into your phone. If you are not activating the unlocked phone in person, AT&T; will mail you the SIM card, and you will need to install the SIM card in the phone.

Power on the unlocked phone and use as normal. The phone is now set up to work with AT&T;'s cellular data network.
