How to Remove & Reinstall Adobe

by James Rutter

The Adobe Flash Player enables your computer to play flash video files (FLV files) on websites such as YouTube and Google Video. Adobe updates this software frequently to enhance its compatibility with website changes and new versions of browser software (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox). If you have recently downloaded a new browser or new version of a browser, your current version of Flash Player may no longer show videos. Completely uninstalling and then reinstalling Flash Player can solve this problem.

Remove Adobe Flash Player

Launch your web browser by double-clicking that program's icon on your desktop.

Download and save the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller from Adobe's website (see Resources). Choose the version that matches your operating system and click on it. Click "Save" when prompted (do not click "Run") and then choose your desktop as the "Save to" location.

Close any applications that run Flash, including all web browsers, Windows Live and any instant messaging programs such as Yahoo! Instant Messenger.

Run the Flash uninstaller by double-clicking its icon on your desktop. Click "Next" or "OK" to progress through each phase of the Adobe Uninstall Wizard. Click "Finish" to complete the uninstall process.

Restart your computer by clicking the "Start" button and then selecting "Restart my computer."

Reinstall Flash Player for Internet Explorer

Launch Internet Explorer by double-clicking the IE icon on your desktop.

Go to the Flash Player download page of Adobe's website (see Resources). Adobe's website will auto-detect your operating system and present you with a link to download the most recent version of Flash Player.

Begin the download by clicking "Agree and Install Now." Click "Install" to begin the installation process.

Close and restart Internet Explorer to complete the install.

Reinstall Flash Player for Other Browsers

Launch your web browser by double-clicking that program's icon on your desktop.

Go to the Flash Player download page of Adobe's website (see Resources). Adobe's website will auto-detect your operating system and present you with a link to download the most recent version of Flash Player.

Begin the download by clicking "Agree and Install Now." Click "Save" to launch the Save To application window. Select "Desktop" and click "OK" or "Save" to save Adobe Flash Player to your desktop. Close your browser after the download has finished.

Run the Adobe Flash Player installation wizard by double-clicking the "Install Adobe Flash Player" icon on your desktop. Click "Next" to progress through each phase of the installation process, then click "Finish" to complete the installation.

Relaunch your web browser to complete the installation.
