How to Print Legal Size on an HP Printer

By Steven Symes

HP's printers have the ability to handle different size sheets of paper, depending on the model printer. Legal size paper measurements are 14 inches by 8.5 inches--larger than the popular size for printer paper. In order to print on this size, you will need to make adjustments to the printer's driver settings as well as the paper guides on the printer. If you are unsure if your printer can successfully feed legal size paper, check the paper handling specifications in your printer's user manual.

Press the printer's "Cancel" button if you are in the middle of printing on the wrong-sized paper. Throw away any documents printed on the wrong-sized paper.

Click on "File" at the top of the window, then select "Print" from the menu. Make sure the printer you need to use appears at the top of the window, or select it from the drop-down menu.

Select the "Properties" button in the upper-right corner of the print window. Select the tab labeled "Features" or "Print/Quality" and choose the type of paper you are printing on in the "Paper Type" or "Paper Is" drop-down menu.

Click on the drop-down menu labeled "Size" or "Size Is" and select "Legal" or "A5" from the list. Click on the "OK" button to save your selections.

Remove all the paper from the printer's input tray and load in legal size paper, making sure to adjust the paper guides. Select the "Print" button on the computer's screen to begin the print job.
