How to Play WMV Files

by Andrew Smith

Windows Media Video, or WMV files, is a type of video that can be played on your computer and portable media players. In the past, computer users have been known to have difficulties opening these files due to a flaw in Windows Media Player or the WMV file. These issues have since been resolved with the newer versions of Windows Media Player and other similar media players. WMV files should now open and play with ease.

Begin by downloading the latest version of Windows Media Player (see link in Resources). Windows Media Player is the default player for Windows Media Video files. If you have just purchased a new computer, the computer probably already has the latest version of the program.

Install Windows Media Player.

Right click on the WMV file you want to play. Select "Open With." Several different programs will appear in a small box. Choose "Windows Media Player." Windows Media Player will then open on your computer.

Wait for the WMV file to load. When it does, a message may appear in Windows Media Player informing you that the WMV file is missing an extension. Click "Yes" and Windows Media Player will still attempt to load the file. The WMV file should then begin playing in Windows Media Player.

Tip

  • check Winamp and VLC Media Player are two software programs that will also play WMV files. These programs can be downloaded and substituted for Windows Media Player when playing WMV files on your computer.
