How to Insert a Micro SD Adapter in a Laptop

by Aramenta Waithe

Secure Digital memory cards are among the most common storage devices for small electronics, such as digital cameras and PDAs. An SD card stores a great deal of information in a small package about the size of a postage stamp. However, many mobile phones use an even smaller type of storage card called MicroSD. MicroSD cards are pin-compatible with standard SD cards. However, you cannot put a MicroSD card in your SD card reader. To transfer data to and from a MicroSD card on your computer, use a MicroSD card adapter.

Place the MicroSD card inside the opening on the back of the MicroSD card adapter. The MicroSD card adapter looks exactly like a standard SD card, except that it has an opening on the back. When inserting the MicroSD card, the labels on the card and adapter should face the same direction.

Connect the SD card reader to one of your computer's open USB ports. If your computer has an internal SD card reader, you may use it instead.

Place the MicroSD card adapter inside the opening of the SD card reader. If the SD card reader faces up, the label on the MicroSD card adapter should face up as well. Push the adapter gently until it can move no further. Some card readers have a spring-loaded ejection system that causes the card to click when inserted completely.

Access the data on the MicroSD card as if it were any other computer storage device; in Windows 7, open the Start menu and click "Computer." Windows gives the MicroSD card a drive letter and displays an icon under the "Removable Storage" heading.

Return to the "Computer" window after using the card. Right-click the MicroSD card's icon, and click "Eject." Wait for Windows to display a notification before removing the MicroSD adapter from the SD card reader.
