How to Format Ebooks for the Kindle

by David Weedmark

With Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing, anyone who has written a book can self-publish it as an e-book and make it available for Amazon's Kindle. Before submitting your book to Amazon to be converted, you should ensure that the manuscript is formatted properly. Proofread carefully and do not rely solely on spell-check software. If possible, ask someone to proofread your work after you've gone over it. A fresh set of eyes will often find mistakes you may have missed.

1

Go to Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) website and create an account by clicking on the "Sign-Up" button. If you already have an account on Amazon.com as a customer, you can use that account. Provide the requested information and then you will be directed to a page to upload your book.

2

Remove any bullets, special fonts, tables, headers or footers from your book. These symbols will not be transferred to the Kindle format when you upload your book. Likewise, your choice of font style will be disregarded when the book is converted to Kindle format.

3

Verify that every chapter in your book ends with a page break.

4

Insert any images in your book using center alignment. Use only image files in JPG format.

5

Create a title page as the first page of your book. It should contain the name of the book and the author's name. Insert a page break after the title page.

6

Create a copyright page as the second page of your book. This can be followed by a dedication page, a preface and then a prologue, as appropriate for your book.

7

Save your book in one of the following formats: HTML, Word (.doc), ePub (.epub), text (.txt) or MobiPocket (.mobi or .prc). Kindle will not accept any other formats.

8

Create a cover for your book using any graphics software. The cover is the graphic that will be shown on the Amazon.com website, and it will appear as the cover when someone downloads your e-book. Remember that while Kindle eReaders display in black and white, Kindle books can also be viewed on color screens on computers, phones and tablets.

9

Save your book cover in JPG or TIFF format with a minimum of 500 pixels horizontally, 1,280 pixels vertically and 72 dpi (dots per inch) in black and white or RGB color.

10

Upload your book to the link provided by Amazon.com in your Kindle Direct Publishing homepage. You will be asked to confirm that you have the right to publish this book. You can then designate a price for the book. Your e-book should appear on Amazon's website within 48 hours.
