How to Fix Windows GUI From the Command Prompt

Errors in the GUI (graphical user interface) of your Windows operating system can make the system unusable, requiring that you resort to the command line prompt in order to effectuate a repair. These errors are a result of corrupted system files, requiring you to perform a repair of the system through the use of your Windows installation CD. This will take from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the speed of your system.

Insert the Windows Installation CD into the computer.

Press "Start," click "Run," type "cmd" and press "Enter" to access the command prompt.

Type "x:" and press "Enter," where "x:" with the drive letter of your CD drive.

Type in "cd i386" and press "Enter."

Type in "winnt" and press "Enter."

Type in "d:\i386" and press "Enter."

Press "Enter" and "F8" to begin the repair and accept the licensing agreement.

Highlight the drive containing your Windows installation and press "R" to repair your GUI features.
