Floppy disks are quickly becoming obsolete, along with the last of the computers with floppy drives installed. A great way to back up the information on your floppies is to copy the disks' images to your computer. Free programs like ImgBurn and Free ISO Creator can help you do so quickly and effectively.

ImgBurn

Step 1

Turn on your computer and insert your floppy disk into the drive. You will hear a click from the drive when it is in all the way. Wait as your computer reads the disk. A window will pop up asking if you want to explore the disk. Click "Cancel".

Step 2

Download and install ImgBurn (see Resources). The software is free, and will automatically update through your network connection so you will always be running the most up-to-date version. Open the software when it is finished installing.

Step 3

Select "Create Image File from Disc". Click the drop-down menu near the top of the program and select your floppy drive from the list of available drives. Click the destination icon and select where you want to save the new ISO file.

Step 4

Click the large green arrow to start the conversion process. Wait as the conversion takes place. (It shouldn't take too long, because floppy disks can not hold very much information compared with more modern storage media). When ImgBurn is done, it will let you know with a chime. Close the program and verify that your ISO file is located in your specified destination.

Free ISO Creator

Step 1

Install and open Free ISO Creator. Insert your floppy disk into the floppy drive. Wait as your computer loads the disk. Click "Options" and select the second file system option, "ISO9660 + Joliet".

Step 2

Click "Add Folder" from the Free ISO Creator right menu and select your floppy disk from the list of available drives in your computer. Press "Select" and the floppy disk will load into Free ISO Creator.

Step 3

Click "Save ISO as" and select the destination of your new ISO file. Click "Convert" and wait as the ISO is created from your floppy disk. Your ISO file will be placed in the destination you specified.
