How Do I Reboot My Computer From the Keyboard?

Although many people instinctively press the power button when this happens, this method of shutting down a computer can cause file corruption and a host of other problems. The proper approach is to reboot your computer so that it executes the correct shutdown sequence. Fortunately, there are simple methods for rebooting your computer from the keyboard without resorting to a “cold” shutdown.

Windows XP

Press the “Windows key” on your keyboard and release it. This is the key with the Windows logo.

Press the “U” key to bring up the shutdown menu.

Press the “R” key to reboot the computer.

Windows Vista

Press the “Windows” key on your keyboard and release it.

Hold down the “R” key.

Press the “right arrow” key three times to reboot the computer.

Windows 7

Press the “Windows” key on your keyboard and release it.

Press the “right arrow” key twice.

Press the “up arrow” key once.

Press “Enter.”
