You can convert PowerPoint presentations into movies by using Windows or Mac.

While there are third-party programs used in capturing/recording screen activities and converting files into multiple formats, it is easiest to use functions from within PowerPoint software itself to create movie file versions of your presentations.

A movie version can serve as backup copy readily accessible in most video playing programs, especially if there's a compatibility issue between your PowerPoint file and the computer used for big-screen projection. It also allows more venues to showcase the presentation by uploading the compatible video format on sites such as Youtube, Vimeo or Facebook.

For Windows

1

Open the PowerPoint presentation file that needs to be converted into movie format. Click "File" from the PowerPoint program's menu.

2

Click the "Save As" option under the "File" menu. From the dialog box that appears, check the "Save as type" drop-down list and choose the "Windows Media Video." This "Save As" option creates a new copy of the PowerPoint file using the movie file format Windows Media Video, more often referred to as the WMV file format. It uses WMV as its file extension, as compared to the PPT file extension of a PowerPoint file.

3

Type in your preferred file name for your output file. Select a destination drive where you want to save the file.

4

Confirm the "Save As" process. A video creation progress bar will appear. Wait for the video creation process to finish.

For Mac

1

Open the PowerPoint presentation file that needs to be converted into movie format. Click "File" from the PowerPoint program's menu.

2

Click the "Make Movie" option under the "File" menu. From the window that appears, type in a file name for your output file. Select the destination drive where you want the file to be saved. Mark the "Append file extension" option on the left side of the "Movie Options" button to make the movie readily viewable to users of Windows-based computers. From the dialog box that appears, select "Movie Options" to configure the video size, quality and playback options you want for your output file.

3

Click "OK" after configuring the video size, quality and playback options.

4

Click the "Save" button. A video creation progress bar will appear on the screen. Wait for the conversion to finish. The movie file format used in a Mac-converted PowerPoint presentation is QuickTime movie, more often referred to as a MOV file format. It uses MOV as its file extension.

Tips

  • check The time it takes to finish the conversion of the PowerPoint file into movie format depends on the original PowerPoint file's size and settings. The number of slides, photos, graphics, animations and movies used as elements within the original PowerPoint presentation also affects the conversion time.
  • check There is another way to make a movie file from a PowerPoint file in a Mac. This other process is very similar to the aforementioned steps in the article. Go to the "File" menu, and instead of selecting the "Make Movie" option, select "Save As." Choose the "PowerPoint Movie (QuickTime format)" option from the drop-down list, then click the "Save" button after typing in your preferred file name and selecting your output file destination drive.

Warning

  • close Older versions of the PowerPoint software (prior to the release of Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010) must use third-party software to convert a presentation to video format.
