How to Convert Odt to Doc Format

by Jamie Lisse

Odt files are Open Office text document files. Open Office is a freeware productivity suite that resembles Microsoft Office. If you have some Odt files that you want to be able to open in Microsoft Word you will need to convert them to the Microsoft Word Doc format. The conversion can be done from within Open Office or on the Media Convert website. Media Convert is an online free file conversion website that supports a variety of file formats, including Odt to Doc.

Download and install Open Office from its website (see Resources) if you want to do the conversion in Open Office. This is freeware, so you do not have to pay for it.

Open the Odt file in Open Office on your computer. Click "File" and "Save As" and select Doc as the file type and save it. This will convert your Odt to Doc in Open Office.

Pull up a web browser on your computer. Go to Media Convert (see Resources) if you want to do the conversion online.

Click "Browse" by "File" to select your Odt file. The input format drop-down should auto detect the file type, or you can select it from the drop-down menu.

Look for the drop-down by "Output format." Select Doc format for your output.

Click "OK" over to the right and wait for the conversion. The screen will change and refresh a few times while it works. When it is over, a link will be on the screen for you to click so you can download the new Doc file to your computer.
