How to Convert KAR Files to CDG

Files with the extension KAR and CDG are audio files that contain music and lyrics information for karaoke songs. The primary difference between KAR and CDG files is that a KAR file's audio track is encoded in MIDI format while a CDG file's audio is stored as a WAV file. Due to the esoteric nature of KAR and CDG files there are few free applications that you can use to convert between the formats, but Karaoke CD+G Creator is a shareware program that provides users with a fully functional, 14-day trial period.
Step 1
Open your Web browser and navigate to the Power Karaoke website.
Step 2
Click "Downloads" at the top of the screen and then click "Evaluation Versions and Updates."
Step 3
Click the "Download Karaoke CD+G Creator" link and save the file to disk. Once the download is complete, double-click the saved file and follow the onscreen wizard's prompts to install the program to your computer.
Step 4
Run the Karaoke CD+G application.
Step 5
Click the "MIDI" button in the program ribbon at the top of the window. Doing so opens a file browser window.
Step 6
Navigate to the folder that contains the KAR file that you wish to convert, then click the file and click "Open" to continue.
Step 7
Slide the "MIDI Output" and "WAV Input" sliders to change the relative volume of the input KAR file and output CDG file.
Step 8
Click "Finish." The Power Karaoke performs an analog KAR to CDG conversion that takes the same amount of time as it takes to play back the file.

- Karaoke CD+G is free to use for up to 14 days. Once your 14-day trial expires, you must purchase the application from the Power Karaoke website to continue using it.
