The Universal Serial Bus, or USB, ports on your Windows 7 computer are used for printing, data transfer and installing software. If you would like to know if your USB ports are working properly, you can access this data through the Device Manager. The Device Manager on your computer is used to tell you whether or not a device on the system is working as it should. The Device Manager also gives you a way to update the drivers for the device.

Step 1

Click the "Start" button and select the "Control Panel."

Step 2

Click "System and Security" and choose the "Device Manager."

Step 3

Select the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" option in the menu. This will list your USB ports.

Step 4

Right-click on your USB ports and select the "Properties" option from the menu. A prompt will appear in the window that says "This device is working properly."

Step 5

Click the "Driver" tab if you do not see this prompt. Click the "Update Driver" option in the window to update the driver to your USB port. This can take about up to three minutes to complete.

Step 6

Wait for the driver to install. Once the driver has installed, the USB port will be ready for use.
